CoupleStars ("we", "us", "our") is operated by Cristian-Andrei Milea PFA, based in Romania, European Union. Cristian-Andrei Milea PFA acts as the data controller for your personal data. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your information when you use the CoupleStars mobile application and website (together, the "Service").

We take the privacy of your personal and relationship data seriously. We do not sell your personal data, use it for advertising, or share it with third parties for their marketing purposes.

Usage Analytics

We use analytics tools (such as PostHog) to understand how features are used and to improve the Service. This may include associating usage events with your account identifier (such as user ID or email).

Events tracked include: sign-up, check-in submissions, ritual completions, alignment reveals, and journey milestones
Analytics are disabled in development environments

We do not use analytics data for advertising or cross-platform tracking.

2. How We Use Your Data

To provide and operate the Service (displaying your check-ins, alignment reveals, constellation progress)
To share relevant data with your partner within your couple (this is core to how the app works)
To generate your relationship portrait and theme recommendations based on your onboarding answers
To analyze usage patterns and interactions within the Service to understand how features are used and to improve functionality, user experience, and overall product quality
To communicate with you about your account (e.g., password resets)

We do not use your personal or relationship data for advertising, profiling for advertising purposes, or sale to third parties. We do not use your data for automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects. We use your data only to operate, maintain, and improve the Service.

Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)

We process your data based on:

Performance of a contract - to create and operate your account and provide the Service
Legitimate interests - to improve, secure, and maintain the Service
Consent - where applicable (e.g., optional features or communications)

3. Data Sharing and Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate CoupleStars:

Supabase (database, authentication, edge functions) - stores your account and relationship data. Hosted in the United States.
PostHog (product analytics) - receives usage events and basic user identification to help us understand how the app is used.
Expo (app delivery and updates) - handles app distribution and over-the-air updates.

We do not share your personal or relationship data with any other third parties. Each service provider processes data only as necessary to provide their service to us.

4. International Data Transfers

CoupleStars is operated from Romania (EU). Your data is stored on Supabase servers in the United States. This means your personal data is transferred outside the European Economic Area (EEA).

These transfers are protected by Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) as provided by our service providers, in compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). You may request a copy of these safeguards by contacting us.

5. Data Security

All data is transmitted over HTTPS (encrypted in transit)
Authentication is handled by Supabase Auth with industry-standard security practices
All database access is protected by Row Level Security (RLS) policies, ensuring you can only access your own couple's data
Authentication tokens are stored securely on your device

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials. While we take reasonable measures to protect your data, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.

6. Your Rights

You have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, including full account deletion. To exercise any of these rights, email us at hello@couplestars.com and we will respond within 30 days.

EU residents may also lodge a complaint with their local data protection authority (in Romania: ANSPDCP). We do not sell personal information.

7. Couple Data and Partner Visibility

CoupleStars is designed for couples. When you use the Service, certain data is shared with your linked partner by design. This includes:

Your daily check-in mood and connection status
Your weekly alignment responses (revealed together after both partners submit)
Shared journey progress, stars, and milestones
Your display name and avatar

By linking with a partner, you confirm that you have their consent to share the data described in this policy.

Onboarding answers and individual reflection notes are kept private and are not visible to your partner unless explicitly stated otherwise in the app.

If you delete your account, your individual data is removed. Shared couple data (e.g., jointly earned stars) may be retained for your partner's continued use of the Service.

8. Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your personal data is permanently removed from our systems within a reasonable timeframe (typically within 30 days), except where retention is required by law. Aggregated, anonymized analytics data that cannot identify you may be retained indefinitely.

9. Children's Privacy

CoupleStars is intended for users aged 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under the age of 18. If we learn that we have collected data from a person under 18, we will delete it promptly.

10. Not Medical or Therapeutic Advice

CoupleStars is a relationship wellness tool, not a medical device, therapy service, or substitute for professional help. The Service does not provide medical advice, therapeutic guidance, psychological counseling, or any form of professional relationship therapy under any circumstances.

Nothing in the Service should be interpreted as a diagnosis, treatment recommendation, or professional opinion. If you or your partner are experiencing a mental health crisis, domestic abuse, or other serious concerns, please contact a qualified professional or emergency services.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Your continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
